Waverly, Fall River & Oakfield is a quiet place to live.

Waverly, Fall River and Oakfield are among the oldest communities in Nova Scotia, inhabited by the Mi’kmaq Nation for centuries,  long before European colonists ever came to these shores.  With a dramatic series of waterways stretching halfway across the province – including Lakes Charles, William, Thomas, Miller, Fletcher and Grand – this has always been one of Halifax’s most coveted areas.

About Waverley, Fall River & Oakfield

It’s not hard to see why it’s been so popular.  Earlier inhabitants loved this area first for practicality, abundance, and ease of transport, and, always, for beauty in all four seasons.

This was also once a notable address for entrepreneurship in Nova Scotia.  It began with the Miller family from Germany – the namesake of Miller Lake – when the patriarch built a dam to power the family’s large sawmill in the early 1800s.  Charles P. Allen also constructed a water-powered mill here in the 1830s so he could manufacture custom furniture.  That activity brought George Taylor to Fall River in the 1830s, as the area settled, to run the Lakeside Inn.  Further along the road, the Rutherfords Inn on Miller Lake was known for lavish entertainment and proved popular with boisterous miners from Waverly, and with the militia stationed in Dartmouth.

It’s not hard to imagine how it must have been, for Waverly, Fall River and Oakfield to feel pristine and unchanging.  The Waverly Road twists and turns like a roller coaster along the length of these neighbourhoods, just a few feet from deep, pristine lakes on one side, and tall conifers on the other.

The housing stock is among the most distinctive in the metro area, ranging from rehabbed cottages to spacious million-dollar mansions on generous, tree-lined lots, or with extensive water frontage, and everything in between.  Shaded, hillside neighbourhoods on 1970s-era family homes, sprawling between the stands of birch and maple.

Developers are steadily expanding neighbourhoods throughout all three communities to create a quiet, suburban idyll just 20 minutes from downtown Dartmouth, or 25 minutes to the center of Halifax.

This area is a great place to raise a family, especially families that love communing with nature.  Canoeing and kayaking are favoured pastimes in three seasons – indeed, the Shubenacadie Canal finished in 1861, attracts paddlers from all over Atlantic Canada.  People who live here explore the lake in all four seasons: ice-fishing, skating and hockey; swimming or kayaking.  Laurie Park, part of the provincial park system, boasts 63 wooded campsites, a lovely sandy beach, and kilometres of trails for hiking and cross-country skiing.  For duffers, Oakfield Golf & Country Club has been considered one of Nova Scotia’s best courses for a generation.

Great new schools abound.  Holland Road Elementary and Ash Lee Jefferson Elementary are highly regarded, with George P. Vanier and Lockview serving junior high and high school students respectively.  With great sports programs and tight-knit communities, friendships made here tend to last decades.
